Overcoming the Winter Blues: Mental Health Workshop
Williamsport, Pennsylvania – February 22, 2025 – The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) North Central Pennsylvania hosted an invigorating event titled “Overcoming the Winter Blues” on Saturday, attracting the public to the YMCA on Walnut Street from 10 AM to 2 PM. Sponsored by AmeriHealth Caritas, UPMC, and River Valley Regional YMCA, the event showcased a variety of alternative therapies aimed at combating mental health challenges commonly faced during the colder months.
One of the highlights was a Sound Bath therapy workshop led by Stacy Clarke from Enso Counseling LLC. Participants immersed themselves in the soothing tones of sound bowls, which are noted for their ability to reduce stress, alleviate anxiety, and enhance mood. Clarke explained that certain bowl frequencies resonate more deeply with individuals, emphasizing the therapeutic benefits.
In another tasty session, Carnie Datres of Kitchen Repose discussed the intricate link between nutrition and mental well-being. Offering attendees a taste of her expertise, Datres provided nutritious meals including a chicken salad wrap paired with fresh fruit. She delved into how dietary choices, particularly regarding carbohydrates and fats, can significantly influence mental health.
Further exploring sound-based therapies, a meditation session featuring Reiki music was also on offer. Guided by Bailey Shawley, a specialized parenting and educational consultant, participants were introduced to the calming practice of Reiki music, which aids relaxation and encourages a meditative state conducive to healing.
The day’s activities extended beyond sound and nutrition. Attendees experienced the therapeutic art of floral arranging, which promotes emotional well-being through creativity and mindfulness. Engaging in this hands-on activity allowed participants to connect with their senses, fostering a sense of tranquility and positivity.
At the NAMI event, several sponsor tables were displayed, offering vital information about an array of services, including mental health support. Among the participants, the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs featured a large table, dedicated to providing resources specifically aimed at supporting our nation’s heroes.
This multi-faceted public event underscored the importance of exploring diverse approaches to mental health, inspiring participants to incorporate these practices into their daily lives for ongoing emotional support and resilience.
