LOCAL Independent Journalism and Free Speech Under Attack

WILLIAMSPORT, PA: The Williamsport Sun-Gazette serves as the primary outlet for your local government to ensure compliance with the Sunshine Law and to provide public notifications of meetings and official actions. The community relies on this media source for timely updates on public affairs. However, FAFO Media LLC operates as an independent, unbiased, web-based news organization through platforms like “Lycoming County – Ya Heard,” sharing information across various social media channels. Recently, the Sun-Gazette blocked both FAFO Media and Lycoming County – Ya Heard from its Facebook page. Additionally, several personal profiles linked to FAFO Media LLC have been blocked by the Gazette for nearly ten years, even though some of these are paying subscribers.
Censorship in any form undermines free speech, especially when an organization with a legal obligation to provide public information imposes paywalls or silences opposing voices to protect certain political interests. The Gazette’s recent actions raise concerns with the upcoming May 20th primary election, as suppressed voices threaten transparency and accountability.
In today’s digital age, the physical newspaper’s relevance continues to fade, replaced by instant information from the internet, social media, and smartphones. These platforms offer real-time, interactive content that appeals to audiences seeking immediate access, making the next-day print cycle increasingly obsolete. Despite some appreciation for print’s tactile and in-depth qualities, industry shifts have driven many newspapers to adopt digital formats to stay relevant amid rapid technological change.
At FAFO Media, we have been actively monitoring how media outlets report and spin information, paying close attention to political biases and influence. For example, on October 11, 2024, during an executive session of the Prison Board, members left the room, leaving only two citizens, two prison officials, and Pat Crosley of the Sun-Gazette. At one point, Deputy Warden Christopher Ebner told Crosley, “You’re on blast now,” referring to an article he wanted published about prison services. Days later, the Gazette ran a piece titled “Lycoming County inmates offered programs to better their lives,” which appeared influenced by county officials’ pressure on the media.
This is precisely why FAFO Media was born — to provide an independent voice. Make room at the county media table, Pat; we’re here to stay. Follow and find out.
